"The program is me pushing in a certain direction, but not explicitly defining what is going to happen" i.e. the generative art process is in defining the constraints, rather than the direct output. It's an indirect way of making art, which to me adds an extra layer of beuty to the process. Kind of like being a parent. Images in a set may be different, even shaare no pixels at all, but have a consistency. emergence - simple of set of rules that you wouldn't expect to do anything interesting, but if you run it enough times or in a particular way interesting properties emerge "[good generative artists]" do an excellent job of blending randomness and structure" "art is a very intuative process. It's guided by a lot of intuition. You make spurious decisions about what to do. PRogramming is almost the opposite off that. It;s very ordered, very structured. "When I'm writing these programs what I'm trying to do is in some way encode what I like generally into the program without making it super precicie, but art is a very intuative parctice its' guided by a lo t of gut intuition and you might make spurious deicisons about what to do, and programming is almost the exact opposite of that It;s very explicit, it's very ordered, very structured. So a lot of generatist aritsts start to wonder, "can I make a porogram that generates an endlessly interesting stream of images that are all diffeerent? How far can I take this?" I'm going to narrow that problem down to just color - imagine your taks is to reate a program that picks colors for every shape in an image to produce something pleasing. It seems Maybe liuke a doable task - color is a 3 dimentional space, pretty straight forward. But as you dig into it you realize, it turns out that color is extrelemy relative. Every one color is affected by the colors that surround it, and by the proximity of those colors, and by the size of them and not only that but color has all these cultural connotations for us, we associate colors with diffferent emotions, we attach colors to bjects, to locations and even to period of time, anda really good artist will use colors in unexpeced ways or ironic ways, and so it becomes pretyt clear that color is actually not just a 3 dimensional space it's tied into an extremely high dimensional contextual space and if you want to write a porogram that can do this what you're really trying to do is make a program that's an arist itself, it rquires nothign short of a strong AI to do this, and at this poiont the difitino of art becomes even muddier than it is"
